28th workshop: "History and memory of concentration camps and sites of extermination: scales and territories"

A leading international academic event for over thirty years, the workshop “History and Memory of Concentration Camps and Killing Sites” brings together young researchers and practitioners each year to discuss the historical, commemorative and methodological issues surrounding the Nazi concentration camp system. The 28th edition will focus on the theme: “Spatial Dimensions and Trajectories”.

From Monday 8 to Sunday 14 June 2026 in Berlin and at the Ravensbrück Memorial, Germany

Established in 1994, this international conference is held annually and serves as an interdisciplinary forum for academic exchange dedicated to the history and remembrance of the concentration camps, extermination centres and forced-labour sites of National Socialism.

The 2026 edition will, as is traditional, be structured around a two-pronged approach. On the one hand, it will explore a region of Europe through the history of the Nazi camps; this year, the focus is on Brandenburg, a region north of Berlin, which is particularly marked by the history of the Ravensbrück camp. On the other hand, it will develop a cross-disciplinary examination of the theme ‘Spatial dimensions and trajectories’.

This theme will invite participants to draw on the insights gained from spatial approaches applied to the history of Nazi camps. Developed over several decades, these methods have proven highly fruitful in enhancing our understanding of the logic behind the camps’ location, movement patterns, deportation networks, and individual and collective trajectories within the concentration camp system.

The papers presented at this meeting will be disseminated in the academic community, notably through the publication of a report in an academic journal and, subject to confirmation, through conference proceedings.
