Conference of the Society for Jewish Studies

For the fourth time in its history, the Society for Jewish Studies is organising its biennial conference, a major event dedicated to the vitality and influence of Jewish studies in the French-speaking world. Established researchers, early-career academics and international specialists will come together to exchange views on the diversity of contemporary research, this year centred on the theme: “Power and vulnerability in history, texts and societies”.

From Sunday 14 to Wednesday 17 June 2026 in Paris

Founded in 1880, the Society for Jewish Studies (SEJ) is continuing, with this fourth edition, the initiative launched in 2019 to organise a biennial conference. This event aims to demonstrate the vitality of Jewish studies across the French-speaking world and to highlight the richness of research conducted in numerous disciplines: biblical and rabbinic studies, history from antiquity to the contemporary era, literature, philosophy, art history and the social sciences.

Judith Kogel, Emeritus Research Director at the CNRS and a recognised specialist in commentaries on sacred texts, the history of manuscripts and grammatical traditions in medieval Hebrew, is coordinating this project alongside the members of the Society for Jewish Studies’ executive committee: Jean Baumgarten, Katell Berthelot, Avital Cohen, David Lemler, Pierre Savy and Sebastian Tank. Designed as an open forum for meetings and exchanges, this conference will bring together established academic researchers as well as early-career researchers and advanced undergraduates and postgraduates.

The recording and streaming of the proceedings on Akadem, as well as the publication of selected papers in the Revue des études juives and Tsafon, will further enhance the academic and international reach of this event.
