Jules Isaac Cultural Centre of Clermont-Ferrand

Since 2013, the former synagogue of Clermont-Ferrand has become a place dedicated to the history of the Righteous among the Nations of Auvergne and more generally to the history of Judaism in Auvergne. It organizes exhibitions, offers educational workshops and hosts conferences, debates and inter-religious meetings.

A synagogue turned into a cultural space

At the initiative of the Jewish Cultural Association of Clermont-Ferrand, a cultural and pedagogical space was inaugurated on 1 December 2013 in the walls of the former synagogue of the city. After works, the synagogue was renamed the Jules-Isaac Cultural Centre.

Visits and activities for the general public

The Cultural Centre's activities are centred on three main themes: memory, citizenship and culture.

The building houses temporary exhibitions and a permanent exhibition dedicated to the Auvergne Jewish community, which has been present in the region since antiquity. A special place is given to the memory of the Righteous among the Nations of Auvergne.

It also hosts conferences, concerts and scientific events for the general public.

Educational workshops

In addition to the exhibitions and conferences it hosts, the cultural centre also offers workshops adapted to school programs for secondary school classes. From 30 minutes to one hour in length, they help clarify particular points related to history, literature, geography or art history programs.

Workshops on the Righteous among the Nations, the history of religion and the architectural rehabilitation of the ancient synagogue are proposed.

Other activities are organised in relation to the current temporary exhibition.
